Prescribing Providers
The process starts here! When you do an intake with us you'll meet with one of our PMHNP team who will walk you through the diagnostic process, help you decide on any medication management if appropriate, and then work alongside you to create a treatment plan that will match your needs, lifestyle, and condition.

Medical Director
Rachel Ward, PMHNP-BC
Rachel is a board-certified PMHNP who works with individuals across the lifespan facing conditions like PTSD, Substance Use Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, ADHD, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders and more. Trained in trauma-informed care through the Boston Trauma Foundation, she takes a holistic, relational, and collaborative approach—integrating lifestyle changes, herbal therapies, spirituality, and medication management to support each patient’s path. Her style is warm and maternal but direct. Her strength is blending of holistic treatments with Western medicine to achieve the finesse required to prescribe significantly fewer meds than is typical for her patient population. She loves working with complex patients who have historically struggled to find acceptance and wholeness in psychiatry. This blend sets the tone for our whole practice.

Rachel graduated from OHSU in 2013 with her BSN. She worked in varied settings from home health and hospice to inpatient until she graduated from Gonzaga University with her MSN in 2023. She founded Something Human Mental Health in 2024 and is currently working to build out the offerings at Something Human to be inclusive of all.

She is an active member of the ACLU and committed to promoting equity and justice in and outside of her clinical work. She is also has additional certification through Postpartum Support International as a Perinatal Mental Health prescriber demonstrating competency in supporting mothers, fathers, and families experiencing perinatal challenges. Her approach is warm and grounded. She blends the wisdom of Eastern medicine with the nuance of Western medicine seamlessly to provide cutting edge support.

Tammy graduated from Boise State University in 2016 with her BSN where she went on to practice on both inpatient medical and inpatient psychiatric settings. She then graduated from Gonzaga University in 2022. She has worked in varied settings since then, including TMS and ketamine clinic, general outpatient management, and is now going on to build out our Women's program at Something Human.

Pediatric and Young Adult Team Lead
Jess Trottier, PMHNP-C
Jess is a certified PMHNP with over 10 years of experience treating adolescents and young adults. She developed a special interest in conditions like ADHD, ASD, PTSD, and eating disorders. Jess believes in empowering patients and families while providing compassionate, whole-person care with the direction of evidenced based tools. Jess pulls from several modalities including CBT-E and Family Based Therapy to treat her patients. Her approach is grounded and direct. She assists her patients in developing new skills of self advocacy and radical self acceptance while maintaining loving boundaries.
While attending Portland State University, Jess worked as a nursing assistant until graduating with a BS in biology in 2017. She then began her practice in psychiatry as a behavioral health therapist, and in 2019 completed the BSN program at Oregon Health & Science University. After completing Legacy Health's nurse residency program in 2020, she has worked as a nurse in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings across the lifespan where she developed her love of eating disorders and treating adolescents. She completed her NP internship at Something Human Mental Health under Rachel Ward, PMHNP and is going on to found an eating disorder outpatient clinic here.
Therapists
After meeting with one of our PMHNPs, we may add some extra support to your team. When appropriate we will either connect you with one of our team of therapists or connect you with an outside therapist based on your specific situation. Your PMHNP will work closely with your therapist as you start to master new skills and start meeting your goals.

Mental Health Therapist
William Swanson, LPC
William is a Licensed Professional Counselor who has worked with adolescents and adults, in crisis and in life transitions. His emphasis centers on the intrinsic and unique value of each individual, exploring and expanding on their personal virtues and character strengths in order to broaden and deepen awareness of the Self. Three questions form the basis of William’s therapy: What are you? Who are you? How are you? In addressing these questions, he is endlessly curious how symbols unlock understanding. William is trained in Contemplative Psychotherapy from Naropa University, and utilizes a variety of therapeutic approaches drawing from diverse philosophical and spiritual traditions.
